TALLER MANOS QUE VEN

San Antonino Castillo Velasco, Oaxaca

The characteristic pieces of Manos Que Ven are made by renowned artisan Maestro José García Antonio, his wife Maestra Santa Reyna Teresita, their children José Miguel, Sara García, Reyna Esther, and son-in-law Jose Luis Reyes Martinez.

Maestro Antonio is unique for being a self-taught artisan. Rather than having the craft handed down to him as is custom, he discovered clay on his own when he was seven years ago.

Nearly two decades ago, Antonio lost his eyesight due to glaucoma. He did not give up his craft, but rather learned to continue working by sense of touch and with the help of his family. Today each family member contributes to the atelier, hand building and firing their work in the large brick kiln of the family studio

‘Manos que ven,’ the name they’ve given their family studio, means 'hands that see.’
