SILVIA GARCÍA
San Bartolo Coyotepec, Oaxaca
San Bartolo Coyotepec is a Zapotec town in Oaxaca, Mexico known for its black pottery. Originally, the local clay’s prominent finish was grey. In the 1950’s that changed with the introduction of burnishing the clay by renowned potter Doña Rosa. The technique turned the grey matte clay into a shiny rich black clay, which until today is what the town is known for.
Maestra Silvia García carries on the tradition of passing along her craft to new generations with passion and perseverance.
